Departmental Office
The Anthropology Departmental Office is located in Room 1.1.1, ground floor, Education House, North Campus. The Office opening hours are 9.45 - 1.00 p.m. and 2.00 – 4.30 p.m. Monday to Friday. Copies of course outlines class handouts, readers, assignments, registration forms etc. will be kept in this office. All essays must be stamped and registered in this office. Electronic submission of essays/assignments needs to be worked out with individual lecturers beforehand, but, if acceptable to the lecturer, a copy is still required to be copied to the departmental office.
Department Notice boards
The notice boards are located directly outside the departmental office, (room 1.1.1, Education House) and another just inside the back entrance to the Arts building. Students are urged to consult these notice boards on a regular basis, as all important notices are posted at these locations.
Registration Forms
Please complete and return your registration forms to the departmental office. It is absolutely essential that we are able to contact you throughout the year by both email and telephone.
Library
John Paul II Library is the main library of NUI Maynooth and is available to you once you have registered and have an NUIM student identity card. An Interlibrary Loans service is also available. Please inform the Department (Deirdre or Jacqui) each time you use this service. A library tour is included in your induction programme.
Marks & Standards
Those students who qualify by virtue of marks (2.1 or higher in the taught year), an
acceptable thesis proposal, and the consent of a Faculty member to serve as a Thesis
Supervisor can then be invited to pursue either a minor thesis MA, or a major thesis Ph.D. All thesis candidates work under the supervision of a member of the Department. The following guidelines apply: each applicant must identify a research topic and consult the Department on the suitability of the topic and on the availability of a potential supervisor.
Proposed topics of research must fall within the specialist geographical or theoretical areas of existing staff. While other permanent members of the Department staff may supervise the thesis, the Department Head must approve the thesis topic.
During their second year, MA thesis students are required to submit a complete draft of their thesis by mid April (if submitting in the Spring) and by the end of June (if submitting in the Autumn). These are the deadlines to which the Department adheres; they are not the same as the dates issued by the Examinations Office.
