MHC62 - MA in Anthropology and Development

Course Information:

All students complete a first, taught year of graduate study.  As part of this year students submit a thesis proposal for a minor thesis MA at Easter, which needs to be approved in order to proceed with their studies. Depending on their overall performance, their specific interests, the availability of advisors, and the viability of their proposals, students registered in this programme will be directed to:

  • Accept a Postgraduate Diploma and discontinue further study;

OR

  • Begin research work on their MA thesis (30 ECTS), due at end of July.

At the successful completion of a minor thesis MA (approx 15,000 words), students may also be encouraged to submit a proposal for a PhD.

Course Structure:

The taught year of the MA programme is thematically oriented towards Anthropology as a comparative enterprise, while developing the theoretical and methodological tools necessary to successfully pursue anthropological research. The course comprises an intensive core class, Anthropological Theory & Ethnographic Practice (I-IV), composed of four half-semester modules, each worth 10 ECTS. Along with this core strand, students must also take four 5 credit modules focusing on Topics in Anthropology and Development.  On successful completion of the 60 taught credits and submission of a thesis proposal, students must then submit a 30 credit thesis by the end of July.
